From the Heart Animal Rescue is a coalition of rescuers dedicated to caring for hurt and frightened victims of accident, disease, cruelty and neglect, by providing the life-saving surgeries, medications and special care that other organizations are unable or unwilling to give. Once rehabilitated, we then work diligently to find each animal the perfect, loving forever home.

HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER AND LEFT TO DIE -- McClain needs your help!

Hi! My name is McClain (after Bruce Willis’ character in Die Hard), and they call me the puppy that wouldn’t die!

My story starts on July 5th, 2008, when From The Heart got a call that a 3-4 month old puppy had been hit by a Ford F-150, dragged and was injured on the side of the road. No one else could or would respond, so a volunteer came to get me to see what could be done.

I was taken to the Animal Emergency Center where the kind vets felt they could save my life. They said any puppy who could survive an “F-150 attack,” deserved every second chance they could get. They stabilized me and then determined I had seven (yes 7!) fractures of the leg, hip and ribs and a total degloving wound of the right leg.

I stayed there for two days until Monday when From The Heart could get me to a specialist at Crossroads Animal Hospital. Dr. Koschmann thought he could help me, if only I could make it through the 4 hours of surgery! Well, I’m the pup that wouldn’t die and came through with flying colors!

But two days later I developed parvo and had to be re-hospitalized for 3 days!

I’m back at Rehab Ranch to rest and heal. They are taking really good care of me, but my foster mom cries every time she changes my bandages (which is once a day) because my wounds look so awful! I try and lick the tears away and tell her it will be okay. She also cries because From The Heart needs money to help me which they don’t have right now. You see, it takes so much just in vet fees and supplies to help me:

Two days at AEC $200 per day = $ 450.00
Specialist surgery $650(one more needed) = $1300.00
Parvo treatment $100 per day (3 days) = $ 300.00

>Total veterinary costs to date $1650.00 Then there are the continuing costs:

Specialist Cast Padding $2.32 a roll per day
Gauze Roll $30 a roll (2 rolls a day) = $ .60
VetWrap (Pet Flex) $1.42 a roll (1 roll a day)
Telfa Dressings (Sterile) $ .25 apiece (2 per day) = $ .50
Wound gel $ 9.00 per tube (1 per day)

The vets have been wonderful on waiting for payment, but they can’t wait forever! From The Heart has promised not to give up on me, but they need your help. They are on their knees begging everyone they know to help with my expenses.

FROM THE HEART RESCUE WINS NATIONAL AWARD

From the Heart Rescue is pleased to announce to our friends, supporters and adopters that it, along with one of our rescued dogs, has received a Special Recognition Award from Pro Plan’s Rally to Rescue Program. From The Heart was selected as one of ten finalists from a field of over 500 rescues nationwide. We received the award in Los Angeles, California on Friday, October 12, 2007 during a ceremony in which the finalists from all over the country, along with animals they had rescued, participated.

The nomination was a result of From The Heart's care and rehabilitation of Nova, a 7-month old German Shepherd, from El Paso, Texas. Nova was found on September 25, 2006, on the side of the road after having been dragged behind a truck. She had lost the pads on her feet, endured broken bones, and suffered abrasions all the way to the bone on two legs. No other local rescue or shelter would take her; that’s when From the Heart stepped forward. Nova went through several surgeries and endured daily bandage changes for six weeks…but she emerged at the end with a loving and gentle personality.

When the perfect home was found in Long Island, New York, nineteen volunteer drivers stepped forward to relay Nova to her new home over the course of two weekends, with a one-week stay in Chicago at Great Dane Rescue. Finally, Nova arrived at her new forever home on December 11, 2006.

NOVA
A PROMISE MADE, A PROMISE KEPT

We cried as we loaded her into the car for what we thought would be a one-way trip to the vet. Broken and bleeding from being dragged behind a truck, we were sure this sweet 7-month old pup would not be with us much longer. But Nova was a fighter. Despite losing the pads on all four feet, severe abrasions on her legs, and a broken foot and leg, she made it clear she would not give up. We made her a promise that day to heal her, both physically and emotionally.

We cried daily for weeks as she laid still for an hour to have her bandages changed. But her tender nature and desire to please made the time, effort and search for donations to help her a labor of love for us all. The day we found her with a pilfered beany baby in her mouth, surrounded by what was once it’s innards, was the day we knew her spirit had healed; her body could not be far behind. We started to truly believe we would be able to keep our promise to her.

We cried again as we loaded her into the car to start her journey across the country to her new family 2200 miles away, but this time it was happy tears. After three months, countless bandage changes and three surgeries, Nova was healed and happy, ready to unconditionally love her new family for the rest of her life. It was a promise fulfilled.

 From The Heart Rescue congratulates all the rescues, and their special dogs, who were nominated for this award. Each dog or cat which comes through a rescue is a winner, because it means another life was saved due to the dedication of a rescuer who most times works unsung.

From The Heart is a non-profit, charitable organization. We do not receive any government funding or tax dollars, but are supported solely by donations from citizens and businesses in our community, and our own fundraising activities.

From the Heart Rescue also was humbled when we were chosen as a finalist for the Hero of the Pass award by the El Paso Chapter of the American Red Cross for our successful efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating Nova.

Previously, From The Heart Rescue won the Hero of the Pass Award iin 2006. The award was received in recognition of our volunteers who had spent a month living in a parking in New Orleans rescuing pets after Hurricane Katrina.

While our rescuers do not do what they do for fame and glory, it is always nice when others recognize our efforts on behalf of the animal community. We were particularly honored to have been nominated for this prestigious award two years in a row!

We thank the Red Cross for their continuing and tireless efforts on behalf of the humans in our community in need!

ADOPTING A FRIEND

Our adoption fees for dogs and puppies is $100. This includes:

- For adult dogs: heartworm and erlichia testing (and treament, if necessary), all routine vaccinations, microchip implantation & registration, and spay/neuter.

- For puppies: worming, two sets of puppy vaccinations, worming, heartworm and erlichia testing (and treatment if necessary) microchip implantation & registration, and spay/neuter.
